The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is One of the Top Museums in the Country
Our apartments in East Tucson are near several museums including one that features a botanical garden, natural history museum, and world-renowned zoo all in one place.
We're talking about the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and its unique exhibits recreate the natural landscape of the Sonoran Desert region.
The museum's mission is to inspire people to live in harmony with the natural world, and about 85 percent of the experience is outdoors.
Desert Museum Gardens
The gardens showcase the vibrant ecosystem of the Sonoran Desert, and they feature 56,000 individual specimens. The museum was recognized by TripAdvisor as one of the "Top Ten Public Gardens" in 2013, and one of the highlights is the Cactus Garden. Celebrating fifty years, it comes complete with a regional collection of cacti and succulents.
Step into the walk-in aviary to see approximately twenty bird species including greater roadrunners. They are one of the most famous birds of the Sonoran Desert, and they have a distinctive shape with long legs, a long neck, and a very long, straight tail. Roadrunners can reach speeds of up to fifteen miles per hour, and while they can fly, they usually stay on the ground.
Cat Canyon is home to an array of animals that can be viewed overhead or at eye level. Don't miss the ocelots as they display one of the most beautiful coats of any animal in the world. They're twice the size of the average house cat, and in many places, they are quite rare. Ocelots range from the southern region of Texas to northern Argentina, and large animals such as jaguars and mountain lions may share their habitat.
